No Reason to Worry About Visa-Free Travel Suspension With EU
Such a statement was made by Botchorishvili following the adoption of a resolution by the EU Parliament to revise the visa-free status of Georgia, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
According to Botchorishvili, the opposition is to blame for misleading the citizens of the country and making them believe that they might lose their visa-free travel privileges to the bloc.
She further stressed that Georgia reached the visa liberalisation agreement with the EU as a result of many important reforms it had made, Agenda.Ge explains.
Botchorishvili also emphasised that the suspension of visa-free travel is a political decision that needs the approval of all the EU member states.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Botchorishvili argued that the visa-free travel suspension mechanism had been developed to serve in cases when there are increased irregular migration concerns.
Moreover, according to her, Georgians follow all the rules when travelling to the bloc and do not present any migration threats.
EU Parliament Called on Commission to Assess Impact of Bill on Visa-Free Travel Regime
The Georgian Parliament has passed a controversial “foreign agents” bill. The bill, which needs to pass another two readings before it enters into force, would require organisations operating in Georgia that receive funding from abroad to be labelled as “foreign agents.”
The bill would also require these organisations to provide detailed information on certain areas and give the Georgian authorities the right to monitor internal discussions.
Such a bill has been considered to be very similar to a law in Russia, and for this reason, the EU Parliament has raised concerns.
Following the bill pass on its first reading, the EU Parliament called on the Commission to assess the impact this bill will have on the visa-free travel regime with Georgia.
The parliament has also said that the EU accession negotiations with Georgia should be halted as long as this law is part of Georgia’s legal order.
The same authority further highlighted that such a bill is not compatible with the EU values and democratic principles.
