34 Finnish Members of Parliament Want to Ban Dual Finnish-Russian Citizenship
According to the survey, part of which became only 96 members of the Finnish parliament out of 200, it was found that a total of 34 of those who responded want to block dual Finnish-Russian citizenship, AtoZSerwisPlus.pl reports.
On the other hand, a larger share, 36 members of parliament, opposed the idea. Meanwhile, 26 members of parliament remained unsure about their stance on the matter.
The survey exposed a clear divide, with the majority of members of parliament supporting the dual Finnish-Russian citizenship ban coming from the Finns Party and the National Coalition Party.
While members of parliament have yet to come to a mutual decision on the matter, the Ministry of Interior of Finland is considering changes to the rules governing dual citizenship.
According to Yle, at the end of 2022, Finland was home to about 90,000 Russian speakers, with a total of 37,813 individuals holding dual Finnish-Russian citizenship.
Members of parliament who were in favour of prohibiting dual Finnish-Russian citizenship said that Russia itself does not recognise dual citizenship.
On the other hand, others who were against said that several other components must be taken into account before the country moves on with any decision on the matter.
Eva Biaudet, who is a member of the Swedish People’s Party, emphasised the importance of maintaining calm in the face of Russian provocations, Yle explains.
She argued that for many Russians who have grown up in Finland, dual citizenship is a vital aspect of their heritage and identity.
Finland has already announced plans to tighten laws on granting citizenship. The country’s authorities said earlier in October that they want to introduce stricter rules for all those who wish to become Finnish citizens.
The Finnish Minister of Interior, Mari Rantanen, said back then that Finnish citizenship was not “automatic” and, at the same time, stressed that once new rules become effective, it will no longer be as easy to obtain citizenship as it is now.
As Minister Rantanen revealed, the government want to extend the residence time requirement for those who wish to become citizens of the country. The residency requirement is to be raised from the current five years to eight years.
