Baltic States Impose Entry Ban on 11 Georgian Officials Over Democratic Concerns
The Baltic States—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—have jointly banned 11 Georgian officials from entering their territories for five years. This decision, led by Lithuania's Ministry of Interior, aims to address concerns over democracy and human rights violations in Georgia. Among those targeted is Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of "Georgian Dream," who has faced criticism for his role in suppressing democratic principles.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister, Gabrielias Landsbergis, emphasized that the Baltic States will not tolerate opponents of democracy or human rights violators. Minister of Interior Agnė Bilotaitė further condemned the violence against peaceful protesters in Georgia, calling it "inexcusable."
Similar sentiments were echoed by the authorities in Estonia and Latvia. Estonia's Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, expressed support for the Georgian people, highlighting their right to protest peacefully, while Latvian officials issued statements denouncing the violence.
The entry ban comes amidst ongoing protests in Georgia, sparked by the government's announcement to suspend EU membership talks until 2028. Protests have escalated, with over 224 demonstrators arrested so far, and reports of violence against protesters have drawn widespread condemnation from EU member states.
Pressure is mounting on other EU countries to take similar actions against the Georgian officials responsible for undermining democracy and human rights. The Baltic States' stance reflects a broader European concern over the deteriorating political situation in Georgia.
