Belgium has witnessed a record surge in citizenship approvals, with 45,538 foreign nationals granted Belgian citizenship in the first nine months of 2024, reflecting a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This marks the highest level of approvals in over two decades, second only to 2001, following the implementation of Belgium's fast-track citizenship law.

Belgium granted citizenship to 54,800 people in 2023, a 13% increase from 2022, marking the third consecutive year of rising approvals. Key insights include:

- 40,473 approvals for non-EU nationals.

- Syria: 3,711
- Romania: 3,440
- Afghanistan: 2,514

Nationals from Türkiye, Poland, Iraq, DRC, and the Netherlands also formed significant numbers.
Easier Rules for Diplomatic Spouses
In 2024, Belgium amended the Nationality Code, allowing foreign spouses of Belgian diplomats to acquire nationality without the standard five-year waiting period. This move, as per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to prevent discrimination against foreign partners of Belgian diplomats.
