Dutch Cabinet Considers Revoking Passports of Dual Citizens Involved in Anti-Semitism
The Dutch cabinet is deliberating on stricter rules to revoke the citizenship of dual nationals who commit anti-Semitic offenses, following recent pro-Palestinian protests that escalated into violence during a match with Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam.
Proposal for Citizenship Revocation Gains Momentum
The PVV and VVD parties proposed the revocation of Dutch passports for offenders. While Prime Minister Mark Schoof expressed interest in exploring the proposal further, existing laws already allow citizenship revocation if national security is at risk. This law, implemented in 2017, has so far led to 59 recorded cases, with 25 finalized.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema condemned the recent riots, where 60 people were arrested, and five hospitalized, calling the anti-Semitic incidents "a burst of hatred that should never happen again."
Legal and Ethical Concerns
The proposal has sparked debate, with critics warning of potential discrimination against those with immigration backgrounds. The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights previously highlighted concerns that such laws could create inequality between Dutch citizens with and without dual nationality.
Under Dutch law, it is illegal to revoke citizenship from individuals with only Dutch nationality, as this would render them stateless. The Council of State, however, allows for revocation in cases deemed threats to national security, with individual assessments for each case.
EU Countries Tighten Rules for Anti-Semitic Offenders
Other European countries, including Germany and Denmark, are also considering stricter measures for anti-Semitic offenses:
- Germany: Six federal states, including Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, have proposed revoking citizenship for dual nationals convicted of anti-Semitic crimes.
- Denmark: The Liberal Alliance party advocates denying citizenship to individuals with values deemed incompatible with Danish society, such as those expressing hate toward Jews or LGBTQ+ communities.
The ongoing discussions reflect broader concerns across Europe about tackling anti-Semitism while balancing the rights of dual nationals and ensuring fairness in the application of citizenship laws.
