EU Ambassador Warns of Fake Schengen Visa Appointments Sold to Turkish Citizens
The EU Ambassador to Türkiye, Thomas Ossowski, has raised concerns about fraudulent practices by tourism agencies that are selling Schengen visa appointments, making it harder for legitimate applicants to secure slots.
Tourism Agencies Selling Free Appointments for Profit
In an interview with Hurriyet, Ambassador Ossowski revealed that some agencies are profiting from visa applicants by selling free Schengen visa appointments. He described this as a fraudulent practice, which is:
- Blocking legitimate applicants from securing appointments.
- Delaying the overall visa process for Turkish nationals.
- Encouraging fraudulent activity, with embassies receiving a high number of fake documents, leading to increased visa denials.
Ossowski even witnessed a tourism agency charging €500 for a Schengen visa, further highlighting the scale of exploitation. He has alerted Turkish authorities, but it remains unclear what actions will be taken to address the issue.
EU-Türkiye Cooperation to Combat Visa Fraud
The EU is actively working with Türkiye to combat these fraudulent practices and ensure a fair and transparent visa process for Turkish citizens, as reported by Türkiye Today.
Despite these challenges, Ambassador Ossowski pointed out that one out of every ten Schengen visas worldwide is issued to Turkish passport holders. However, regarding visa liberalization, he stated that Türkiye still has more work to do before reaching a visa-free travel agreement with the EU.
Turkish Nationals Among the Highest Schengen Visa Applicants
