EU Faces Criticism Over Strict Schengen Visa Rules for Turkish Businesspeople
The European Union has once again faced criticism over its strict Schengen visa rules, which are significantly affecting Turkish businesspeople and contractors aiming to access the bloc for trade purposes.
During a meeting with journalists, Nail Olpak, the President of the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Türkiye (DEIK), expressed deep concerns about the situation. He noted that Türkiye conducts 56 per cent of its imports and 50 per cent of its exports with the EU, highlighting the essential role of smooth trade relations. Olpak stressed that despite recent dialogue between the EU and Türkiye, more proactive measures are needed to facilitate the movement of Turkish businesspeople for trade purposes.
Olpak also pointed out that visa problems are obstructing business activities and mentioned the presence of protectionist policies that hinder Turkish contractors from operating in the EU. These challenges have become a recurring issue, sparking widespread criticism from various sectors.

The President of the International Transporters Association (UND), Şerafettin Aras, recently commented that the strict Schengen visa rules targeting Turkish truck drivers are damaging trade relations. Aras emphasized that these hurdles not only create logistical barriers but also harm the EU itself by imposing restrictions on its consumers and businesses.
To address these issues, the UND has proposed several measures to streamline the visa process for Turkish truck drivers. These include:
- Prioritization of Visa Applications: EU member states should prioritize granting Schengen visas to drivers.
- Multiple-Entry Visas: Drivers should be issued multiple-entry visas to facilitate repeated trips.
- Simplified Visa Application Process: The visa application process for drivers should be simplified.
