EU Proposes New Sanctions Targeting Entities Supporting Russia's War in Ukraine
The European Union is preparing its 15th sanctions package in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. These proposed measures aim to impose asset freezes on six China-based companies and a visa ban on one Chinese citizen linked to aiding Russian firms involved in the conflict. Additionally, the sanctions include penalties for 54 individuals and 29 companies, most of which are Russian, with six entities based in China or Hong Kong, one of them owned by a Russian.
Impact of Previous Sanctions on Russian Nationals
Since the war began in 2022, the EU has implemented various sanctions on Russian nationals, including closing visa application centers, which has limited their access to Schengen visas. Despite these restrictions, interest in visiting the EU remains high. Data from Continent Express revealed a 35% increase in business and tourist visas for Russian nationals between January and October 2024, highlighting their efforts to find alternative ways to travel to the EU.
Tightening Rules for Russian Nationals Across the EU
The EU continues to implement stricter measures to address security concerns stemming from the war. These include closing the EU airspace to Russian flights, blacklisting individuals, and introducing tighter citizenship and visa rules for Russian nationals.
Czechia is among the countries leading these changes, with plans to ban dual citizenship for Russian nationals. Under the proposed rule, Russians applying for Czech citizenship would have to renounce their Russian citizenship to obtain Czech nationality.
Calls for Unified EU Action
EU migration chief Ylva Johansson has called for stronger collective action, urging member states to stop issuing visas to Russian nationals entirely. However, some countries, like Germany and France, remain opposed to tightening visa restrictions for Russian diplomats and have yet to comment on these developments.
