EU Revises Explanatory Guidelines on Passenger Rights to Provide More Clarity
By revising the guidelines, the Commission aims to address common concerns that have been raised in the last years by operators and national enforcement bodies, and it also wants to make it simpler for all passengers to know their rights, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
The guidelines will also help to improve the implementation of passenger rights by transport operators.
As part of its revision, the EU body has added a section on passenger rights when there are massive travel disruptions.
Moreover, revised explanatory guidelines have also been published on the rights of passengers with disabilities and those with reduced mobility when travelling by air.
Commenting on the move, the EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Responsible for Transport, Wopke Hoekstra, said that the guidelines will continue to provide support for authorities of the member states and transport operators.
Commissioner Hoekstra further noted that this revision will also help EU citizens to be more aware of their rights.
Eurobarometer Shows That EU Citizens Are Not Fully Aware of Their Passenger Rights
A new Eurobarometer survey has shown that European citizens are not fully aware of their passenger rights and feel that there is a lack of information on their rights.
According to the survey, only around 30 per cent of air passengers said that they are well informed about their passenger rights.
In addition, only around 33 per cent, 27 per cent, and 16 per cent of passengers said that they are well informed about their rights for travel by rail, coach, and ship/ferry, respectively.
The survey further revealed that about 84 per cent of the respondents who requested assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility were happy with the handling of the situation.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the same survey showed that 35 per cent of respondents had seen information about their passenger rights in the past and that there was good satisfaction with how disruptions were handled for flights.
