The proposal to introduce a joint EU travel ban on Russian diplomats and their families has sparked division among member states:
- Czechia, during its EU presidency in 2022, proposed stopping visas for Russian envoys, citing security risks.
- Nine countries, including the Netherlands and the Baltic nations (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), support the ban.
However, Germany and France remain opposed to the plan, citing concerns over:
- Safety of EU Diplomats: Both countries fear retaliatory actions against hundreds of their citizens on diplomatic missions in Russia.
