European Travellers Embrace Longer Holidays and Explore New Locations
ETC Report: European Travellers Plan Longer, Costlier Holidays While Exploring New Destinations in 2025
European travel trends are shifting significantly in 2025, according to a recent report from the European Travel Commission (ETC). The report indicates that while travel intentions remain strong across the continent, Southern Europe is seeing a dip in popularity, as more travellers seek out alternative and lesser-known destinations.
Budgeting Takes a Backseat
One of the most notable changes is that budget-conscious travel is no longer the norm. Instead, travellers are spending more and placing greater emphasis on discovering hidden gems and alternative locations. This trend signals a growing demand for unique travel experiences and extended stays.
Nationalities With the Highest Travel Intent in 2025
The report highlights which nationalities are most likely to increase their travel this year:
- Poles lead the way, with travel intent up 80% compared to 2024.
- Brits, Dutch, and Spaniards also show a strong rise, ranging from 75% to 79%.
- Italians follow closely with a 73% increase in travel interest.
However, the trend is reversed in Western Europe, where French (down 65%), Belgians (68%), Austrians (69%), Swiss (69%), and Germans (70%) report declining travel intentions for 2025.
Extended Stays and Higher Spending
Travelers are not only planning more trips—they’re also staying longer and spending more:
- 27% of Europeans plan to take three or more trips by September—up 6% from last year.
- 42% expect to stay between 7 and 12 nights, a jump of 11% from 2024.
- 30% will spend between €1,501 and €2,500 per person per trip—a 7% increase from 2024.
- 17% plan to spend more than €2,500 per trip.
New Travel Destinations Gaining Popularity
While Southern and Mediterranean Europe remain popular, interest has dropped by 8%. In contrast, Eastern European destinations are gaining traction, with a 3% increase in travel intent. Countries like Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Bulgaria have each seen a 1% rise in popularity.
Climate Change Influencing Travel Choices
Climate awareness is also shaping travel decisions in 2025. 81% of European travellers say that climate concerns influence their planning. Among the measures they’re taking:
- 17% are checking weather forecasts more frequently
- 15% are choosing destinations with milder climates
- 14% are avoiding areas prone to extreme heat
