France Proposes Ending Visa-Free Travel for Algerian Diplomatic Passport Holders
French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin has called for ending the visa exemption for Algerian diplomatic passport holders amid escalating tensions between France and Algeria. This follows the arrest and expulsion of an Algerian influencer who posted a violent-incitement video on TikTok. The influencer, expelled to Algeria on January 9, 2025, was promptly sent back to France by Algerian authorities the same day, further straining relations.
Calls to Suspend the 2013 Visa Agreement
Minister Darmanin now seeks to suspend the 2013 French-Algerian agreement, which allows Algerian diplomatic passport holders to enter France visa-free and move freely within the country. Darmanin argued that targeting this facilitation could be a more effective and intelligent response to the lack of cooperation from Algeria.
Mutual Respect Urged Amid Tensions
Minister Darmanin emphasized the importance of mutual respect in the France-Algeria relationship. While acknowledging Algeria’s sovereignty, he criticized their response to the influencer’s expulsion as humiliating for France.
Conversely, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected France’s accusations, calling the influencer’s expulsion from France arbitrary and abusive. They defended their decision to return him, suggesting it was justified and not intended to escalate the situation further.
