Strengthened Collaboration for Accelerating Residence Permits in Greece
The Greek Deputy Mayor and the Ambassador have discussed enhancing collaboration with the department responsible for granting permits. This initiative aims to expedite the issuance of residence permits for agricultural workers, addressing labour shortages in critical sectors.
The Andravida region, known for its agricultural production, heavily relies on Bangladeshi nationals, who form a significant part of the labour force. These workers contribute extensively to agricultural activities and are vital for the region's economic output.
Greece to Grant Residency Rights to Over 30,000 Undocumented Migrants
In 2023, the Greek government introduced a scheme targeting unskilled labour shortages by offering residency rights to approximately 30,000 undocumented migrants who have lived in Greece for the past three years. The scheme primarily benefits agricultural workers, including nationals from:
- Bangladesh
- Albania
- Georgia
- The Philippines
The law allows these migrants to obtain residence permits, thereby regularizing their status and enabling them to work legally. In addition to granting permits, the government aims to provide more long-term benefits to migrants who have demonstrated extended residence in the country.
Greece Collaborates with Egypt to Address Labour Shortages
To combat the ongoing labour shortage, the Greek Migration Minister announced efforts to recruit workers from Egypt. In 2022, Greece and Egypt signed an agreement to facilitate the recruitment of 5,000 seasonal workers from Egypt.
Last summer, the first group of 2,400 Egyptian workers arrived under this agreement, with more expected in subsequent phases.
Regularization of Bangladeshi Migrants in Greece
As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2022, 3,405 Bangladeshi migrants received residence permits. Thousands of others are in the process of applying, provided they meet the following criteria:
- Valid Bangladeshi passport
- Proof of residence in Greece before 2022
- Proof of employment
Bangladeshi nationals must first register with the Bangladesh Embassy in Athens and then submit their applications through the Greek government’s online visa portal. By meeting these requirements, they can achieve legal residency and continue contributing to Greece’s agricultural sector.
