Iranian Scholars and Researchers Call on Ireland to Resolve Year-Long Visa Delays
A group of Iranian nationals seeking to work, study, or conduct research in Ireland is urging authorities to address long visa processing delays, which have led to missed job opportunities and academic positions, significantly impacting their careers. While dozens are actively seeking faster processing, it is estimated that hundreds are affected by the backlog.
High Rate of Pending Applications for Iranian Nationals
According to Irish Department of Justice data, Iranian applicants filed 350 long-term visa applications in 2024, with:
- 190 approved (54%)
- 29 refused (8%)
- 131 still pending (37%)
Compared to other major applicant groups, Iran has one of the highest shares of pending applications:
- India: 5.9% pending (1,806 out of 30,177 applications)
- China: 2.6% pending (186 out of 6,939 applications)
Iranian Scholars Urge Authorities to Address Backlogs
Frustrated by prolonged processing times, Iranian scholars have submitted two appeals:
- Expedited processing for long-pending applications.
- Increased resources to tackle visa backlogs and ensure consistent processing timelines.
Despite multiple attempts to reach Irish authorities, no clear response has been received. The group has contacted the Honorary Consulate of Ireland in Tehran and the new Irish ambassador, but as of February 18, 2025, no response has been provided.
