Kyrgyzstan Urges Switzerland to Grant Visa-Free Access for Official Passport Holders
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan has revealed that the Director of the Consular Department, Seitek Zhumakadyr uulu, has requested Switzerland to extend its visa-free regime to include official passport holders of Kyrgyzstan. This proposal was made during a meeting with Christophe Godin, the Consul of the Swiss Embassy in Kyrgyzstan.
Zhumakadyr emphasized the need to create an additional protocol to the 2016 bilateral agreement that already allows visa-free travel for diplomatic passport holders. This would enable official passport holders to enjoy similar privileges. While Switzerland has not confirmed any decisions, both parties agreed to maintain close communication on matters of mutual interest.
Currently, diplomatic passport holders from Kyrgyzstan are exempt from Schengen visa requirements when traveling to Switzerland for official or personal purposes without engaging in paid activities. However, ordinary passport holders from Kyrgyzstan must obtain a visa to enter Switzerland or any other Schengen country.
According to Schengen Statistics, in 2023, Kyrgyzstan citizens filed 27,163 visa applications. Of these, 21,957 were approved, and 5,104 were denied. The applications were primarily submitted to Germany (12,236), Hungary (10,649), and Switzerland (4,278).
