The proposal to restrict border crossings with Russia and Belarus was made by Latvia’s Ministry of the Interior at the request of the State Border Guard. The government approved the measure, citing the current geopolitical situation, particularly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as the primary reason for reinforcing border security.
According to a report by BNN, the Ministry emphasized the need to enhance security measures and improve the efficiency of border control at the three affected checkpoints.

Latvia's Ministry of the Interior highlighted that similar security concerns have been raised by other countries, including Finland, which recently implemented stricter border controls due to increased migrant activity.
The Ministry warned that gatherings of migrants near border crossings pose a significant safety risk, which could lead to mass unrest or attempts to breach border regulations — threatening Latvia’s national security.
Preventative Measures to Strengthen Border Security
The Ministry stressed the importance of adopting precautionary measures to mitigate security risks and safeguard Latvia’s borders.
To address irregular migration, Latvia has already constructed a border fence along its border with Belarus and plans to complete a similar barrier along its border with Russia by the end of the year. These measures are part of a broader strategy to strengthen national security and improve border control efficiency.
