Lithuania Plans to Restrict Return Trips for Belarusian Migrants
Lithuania Considers Travel Restrictions for Belarusian Migrants Amid Security Concerns
The Lithuanian Parliament is currently reviewing a proposal to limit return journeys for Belarusian migrants, citing national security concerns as the primary motivation behind the measure. Although data from the State Border Guard Service indicates that the number of Belarusian nationals crossing the border is declining each year, Lithuanian lawmakers argue that certain movements still pose a potential security threat.
Interior Ministry Pushes Back Against the Proposal
The proposal has sparked internal criticism, particularly from the Lithuanian Interior Ministry, which warned that enforcing such a rule would place additional strain on government agencies and resources. Officials stress that the country must balance national security with effective administrative capacity.
Analysts and Citizens Call for Case-by-Case Consideration
Vytis Jurkonis, a respected Lithuanian political analyst, urged lawmakers to consider the complexity of individual cases, highlighting that many Belarusian migrants have family obligations or travel back to Belarus for business purposes.
Speaking to local media, a Belarusian national residing in Lithuania emphasized that migrants travel home not only to visit family members but also to maintain professional ties and fulfill business responsibilities.
Targeting the Real Security Threats
Jurkonis also pointed out that Belarusian intelligence services are reportedly monitoring their own citizens, and added that Lithuanian nationals are also being targeted by these operations. He suggested that any travel restrictions should specifically apply to those genuinely posing a risk to Lithuania’s security, rather than being broadly applied to all Belarusian nationals.
Increase in Irregular Border Crossings Along Eastern EU Frontier
According to Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, the Eastern Land Border—which includes the Lithuania-Belarus crossing—saw a 6% increase in irregular crossings in February 2025. A total of 962 unauthorized border entries were recorded, with the majority of individuals coming from Ukraine, Russia, and Sudan.
