Majority of Polish Nationals Favor Reintroducing EU Border Controls to Limit Migration, Survey Finds
A recent SW Research survey conducted for Rzeczpospolita revealed that 62% of Polish respondents support the reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area as a measure to curb irregular migration.
Public Opinion on Border Controls
The survey posed the question: "Do you believe that the European Union should reintroduce border controls between countries in the Schengen Area to curb the flow of migrants?" The results showed that nearly two-thirds of Poles are in favor of reinstating such measures.
Tightening Efforts to Combat Irregular Migration
The survey results come amid ongoing immigration policy debates in neighboring Germany. Recently, the German parliament rejected a conservative-backed immigration bill, which was supported by the far-right AfD, preventing it from becoming law. Meanwhile, German authorities are considering permanent border controls, a move that has faced criticism from Poland.
Several Schengen countries have already reinstated border controls, citing security concerns and irregular migration. The latest nations to notify the EU of such measures include Germany, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Malta, Italy, and Hungary.
Poland Opposes EU Migration Pact and Border Controls
In October 2024, a month after Germany reintroduced border controls, Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the decision a mistake and reaffirmed Poland’s opposition to the policy.
Beyond rejecting border controls, Poland has also opposed the EU Migration Pact, particularly its relocation mechanism, which aims to distribute asylum seekers across EU member states. The Polish government argues that accepting relocated migrants would undermine the efforts of border police, soldiers, and security forces who work to prevent irregular migration and ensure Poland remains one of the safest countries in Europe.
As debates over border security and migration policies continue across the EU, Poland remains firm in its stance against both internal border controls and forced migrant relocations.
