6,105 Politically Persecuted Descendants Gained Austrian Citizenship in 2024, with 99.8% Living Abroad
Between January and September 2024, Austria granted citizenship to 6,105 descendants of politically persecuted individuals, with 99.8% (6,094 individuals) residing abroad. Most of these new citizens originated from Israel (3,608, or 22.8%), followed by the United States (1,303, or 8.2%) and the United Kingdom (548, or 3.5%). Of these, nearly half (48.9%) were women, and one-third (33.5%) were minors.
Overall Austrian Naturalisation Numbers Soar in 2024
During the first three quarters of 2024, Austria naturalised 15,824 individuals, marking a 43.4% increase compared to 2023, when 11,033 people gained citizenship. Of this total, 6,133 individuals (38.8%) live abroad, while 3,227 (20.4%) were born in Austria.
The majority of naturalised citizens residing in Austria came from Syria, accounting for 1,699 naturalisations (17.5%). Türkiye followed with 1,013 individuals (10.5%), and Afghanistan ranked third with 753 individuals (7.8%). Other significant groups included citizens from Bosnia and Herzegovina (608, or 6.3%) and Iran (500, or 5.2%).
Regional Breakdown of Naturalisation Trends
Upper Austria emerged as the most popular destination for new Austrian citizens, with 1,869 individuals naturalised in 2024, marking a 50.2% increase compared to the previous year. Styria and Salzburg followed, with naturalisation increases of 40.4% (1,271 individuals) and 34.3% (485 individuals), respectively.
However, Vienna and Burgenland recorded slight decreases in naturalisations, dropping by 2.9% (2,777 individuals) and 2.7% (143 individuals), respectively.
