New Schengen Report Urges Faster Rollout of ETIAS and EES Systems
New Schengen Report Urges Swift ETIAS & EES Rollout and Border System Reforms
The 2024–2025 State of Schengen Report, published by the European Commission, stresses the urgent need to implement the Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to enhance border security across the borderless Schengen Area.
Call for Legislative Action and Smooth Implementation
The Commission has urged co-legislators to swiftly adopt the necessary proposals to facilitate the rollout of ETIAS, while also calling on Member States to overcome persistent implementation challenges. The report reinforces the EU’s broader push to replace traditional checks with digital, modern border management systems, ensuring both security and the protection of fundamental rights.
Digital EU Travel Documents and Border App in Development
As part of the digital transformation, the Commission is also advancing efforts to digitalise travel documents across the EU. In October 2024, a proposal was introduced to create a common standard for EU-issued digital travel documents, alongside plans for an EU-wide mobile app aimed at simplifying border checks. Negotiations with the European Parliament and Council on these proposals are currently in progress.
Modernised Visa Process for Third-Country Nationals
Progress has also been made on the modernisation of visa procedures for non-EU citizens. These changes aim to streamline application processes while reinforcing security, and deadlines have been set for implementation to maintain momentum.
Key Schengen Achievements and Expansion
The report highlights Schengen’s continued global prominence, noting that it remains the world’s most visited destination, with over 500 million visitors. Security improvements have also been significant, with irregular border crossings falling to their lowest levels since 2021.
Additionally, the full accession of Bulgaria and Romania is marked as a milestone achievement, expected to strengthen the EU’s economy and cohesion.
