Norway Reopens Embassy in South Sudan Amid Slight Security Improvement
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the reopening of its embassy in Juba, South Sudan, following a temporary 13-day closure. The embassy was shut down on March 26 due to a deteriorating security situation in the country. While the Ministry has not specified the exact reason for reopening, the decision appears to follow a slight improvement in the local conditions.
Travel Advisory for South Sudan Remains at Highest Level
Despite the embassy's reopening, Norway continues to advise against all travel to South Sudan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the country’s travel warning remains at its highest level, urging Norwegian citizens currently in South Sudan to leave immediately.
The government also emphasized its limited ability to offer consular support in the region, warning citizens of the risks associated with remaining in South Sudan during the ongoing instability.
Germany Maintains Embassy Closure in Juba
Norway is not the only country that has adjusted its diplomatic presence in South Sudan. Germany also closed its embassy in Juba on March 22, citing rising political tensions and fears that the country could be pushed to the brink of civil war.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated Germany’s stance, stressing that local authorities must uphold the peace agreement and end the violence. She added that the safety of embassy staff is Germany’s top priority, and the embassy will remain closed until further notice.
So far, Germany has made no indication of reopening its embassy, and it's unclear whether it will follow Norway's lead.
