Poland Extends Border Controls With Slovakia Until January 2, 2024
Announcing the news, the Polish Border Guard said the internal border controls with Slovakia had been extended until January 2, 2024. However, it stressed that checks will be carried out only for those entering Poland, AtoZSerwisPlus.pl reports.
The decision of Poland to extend its border checks with Slovakia comes amid an increase in irregular migrants.
Slovakia is a transit country where many migrants, mainly from the Middle East and Afghanistan, pass through on their way to Western Europe. For this reason, Poland has decided to keep controls in place so irregular entries are prevented.
Poland initially reinstated internal border checks with Slovakia on October 4. Since then, the country has continuously extended them, citing irregular migration concerns.
When the previous extension took place, the Polish Ministry of Interior said that people would be able to cross the Polish-Slovak border at eight checkpoints.
Similarly, during the period that border controls are again in place, a number of checkpoints will be open for movement.
According to the Ministry, some of the checkpoints where people usually walk across the border will now let cars and trucks through, as long as the road rules allow it.
However, big buses and vehicles that can carry more than seven or up to nine people are an exception. The changes apply to the following border crossings:
- Konieczna
- Niedzica
- ?ysa Polana
- Chocho?ów
- Winiarczykówka
- Ujso?y
- Bór
- Jaworzynka – ?ierne – Skalité
Regarding the rules about who can pass through these borders from EU countries, European Free Trade Agreement countries, and Switzerland, along with their spouses and kids, the Ministry said that they are still the same.
All travellers have been warned to keep their travel documents on them at all times – their ID or passport, depending on their citizenship.
Poland is not the only country that has decided to keep internal border controls in place with Slovakia until next year.
Czechia announced just recently that the country will keep its border checks with Slovakia in place until January 3, 2024.
Commenting on the extension of the measure, the Czech Minister of Interior, Vit Rakusan, said that the country wants to combat irregular migration.
Minister Rakusan further said that border checks are necessary as there is currently a lack of common EU policies that are aimed at guarding the external borders of the bloc.
