Poland Rules Out Reopening Border With Belarus Amid Ongoing Migrant Crisis
Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak has confirmed that Poland has no plans to reopen its border checkpoints with Belarus, citing escalating tensions and continued "migrant instrumentalisation" by Belarusian authorities.
Migrants Used as a Tool of Provocation
Polish authorities have repeatedly accused Belarus of orchestrating waves of irregular migration as part of a broader political strategy aimed at destabilizing EU borders. Minister Siemoniak specifically condemned Belarusian provocations against Polish border guards and warned of ongoing hybrid threats.
Brutality Increasing at Border
On April 5, the Polish Border Guard reported that the migrant crisis at the Poland-Belarus border is intensifying, noting an increase in violent incidents and organized attempts to breach the border.
The European Union has echoed these concerns, with several member states accusing Russia and Belarus of using migrants as geopolitical tools—a practice referred to as "instrumentalised migration."
Coordinated EU Response and Border Reinforcement
In response, Poland, alongside Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, has implemented heightened border controls with both Belarus and Russia, aiming to combat illegal crossings and safeguard national security.
Asylum Access Suspended for Migrants Crossing From Belarus
As reported by Politico, Poland is advancing a new law, supported by EU leaders, that would suspend the right to seek asylum for individuals entering the country through Belarus. This move follows claims by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk that Russia is driving migration flows to Poland as a form of “hybrid warfare.”
Tusk stated in October 2024 that most irregular migrants were nationals of African and Middle Eastern countries, and accused Belarusian border guards of actively assisting these crossings.
According to Tusk, Poland is witnessing 100 to 200 attempted crossings daily, placing significant pressure on national resources and border enforcement.
Rights Groups Raise Legal and Ethical Concerns
However, the proposed policy has drawn strong criticism from human rights organizations, which argue that it would violate EU and international refugee law by legalizing “abusive pushbacks.” Critics insist that every asylum seeker must have the right to individual assessment, regardless of their point of entry.
