Poland to Tighten Work and Student Visa Criteria
The document presented by them proposed a systematic as well as legislative solution, mainly for work and student visas with the aim of taking control over Poland’s visa system, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
According to the Polish authorities, the country has been experiencing migration pressure since 2015.
This pressure further increased when employers were demanding more and more workers from non-EU countries.
Due to irregularities in the visa system of Poland, there was a common belief that it was very easy and cheap to obtain a Polish visa. Moreover, non-EU students also started to reach Poland with the pretext of studying in the country just to enter the Schengen Area and then stay in the zone irregularly.
This resulted in a high number of foreigners obtaining a Polish visa but not registered to be within the country’s territory, pushing the authorities to take immediate action.
What Will Change Now?
As the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed, the process of tightening the Polish visa system has already started.
As part of the measures, Poland wants to relieve the workload on Polish consulates by redirecting foreigners who are already in the country to undergo “legalisation procedures”, in this case, obtain a residence permit, instead of applying for visas again.
Moreover, the country plans to tighten the verification rules to see whether an employer is ready to provide the appropriate work conditions and to revise sanctions that will apply in cases where an employer is found to have hired someone without proper documentation.
As for foreign students, the Ministry stressed that the country will introduce a mandatory pre-selection requirement for them. All universities will be required to do the pre-selection process.
Another important change is that the country is considering limiting the access of foreign students to the Polish labour market.
In addition, Poland also wants to increase the minimum funds requirement for students applying for a visa or residence permit and require students to have a minimum amount of required funds blocked.
Visas Will Now Be Issued in a Controlled Manner
Taking into account the irregularities found in the system, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that visas for workers and students will now be issued in a controlled manner.
The same stressed the urgent need to make changes to the system as the number of foreigners who have migrated to the country in the last six years has consistently increased.
Moreover, the move to tighten the visa rules for foreign students also comes after it was found out that a high number of students drop out of university after the first year.
This means that foreign students apply for a Polish visa just to enter the Schengen Area and then they decide to remain irregularly in the country or move to another member state.
