Polish Universities Accused of Being Involved in Country’s Visa Scandal
As Dziennik Gazeta Prawna (GDP) claims, tens of thousands of students from third countries, mainly from Rwanda, Türkiye, and Zimbabwe, enrol in Polish universities just to obtain visas.
Once they enter Poland, they decide to no longer pursue their studies after completing their first year and instead choose to remain irregularly in the Schengen Area.
While students take some share of the fault, Polish universities have been accused of being the main “villains” in this case and directly involved in the country’s visa scandal, .
As GDP explains, foreign students are the main source of income for some Polish universities. As a result, many of these universities do not check the qualifications of foreigners before admitting them.
This means that as long as foreigners pay to enrol in some Polish universities, they get accepted and then are issued a visa which permits them to work and reside in the country.
However, the main concern is that these students do not return to their home countries once their visa expires. Instead, some of them choose to remain irregularly in Poland or the other member states.
Polish Universities Are Now Under Investigation
Taking into account the severity of this issue, three private Polish universities are currently under investigation.
Experts have highlighted that immediate changes need to be made to eliminate pathologies in the system.
Moreover, it has been suggested that all universities in the country that accept foreign students are subject to special controls by the Polish Accreditation Committee so that all irregularities are halted once and for all.
Data show that one year of studies in the English language at a Polish university costs around €3,100.
Moreover, it has been revealed that around 61 per cent of students at the country’s University of Management and Administration in Opole are foreign nationals, adding to the proof that Polish universities are admitting ineligible foreign students just to add to their income.
The Ministry of Interior and Administration has confirmed that an inter-ministerial working group has been established and they will now be working to eliminate the irregularities in the visa system.
Poland has also started an investigation on some of its IT companies who were supposed to bring foreigners on work visas but the specialists never made it to the country.
This particular investigation was launched after the authorities found out that there was a discrepancy between the number of foreign workers who were granted a visa and the number of foreign workers who actually entered the country for work purposes.
