Slovakia Applies Facilitated National Visa Rules for Foreign Workers Starting Today
The government of Slovakia approved provisions aimed at easing access to the country’s long-stay national visa (D visa) last year.
Back then, the government stressed that under the new programme, foreign workers from select countries would initially be granted a one-year visa provided that they have a profession that is experiencing shortages, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
The government further disclosed that only certain positions will make foreigners eligible for the programme.
The programme that became effective on July 15 will give facilitated access to Slovakia national visas to foreigner forklift operators, welders, construction workers, operation electricians, and those who have various assembly worker roles in engineering production, rubber, chemical, and plastic production and electronic devices production, among others.
Easier access to national visas will also be given to agronomists, cooks, waiters, breeders, bakers, milk processors, butter producers, equipment operators, cleaners, and kitchen workers, amongst others.
However, foreign workers who have one of the roles mentioned above, among many others, must also meet another condition in order to be granted a one-year national visa for work purposes in Slovakia.
Who Is Eligible for Slovakia’s National Visa Under Simplified Rules?
As the Slovak government explained last year, to be eligible for national visas under simplified conditions, foreign workers must be nationals of one of the 17 third countries mentioned below:
- Armenia
- Azerbaijan
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Georgia
- Indonesia
- Kazakhstan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Moldova
- Montenegro
- Nepal
- North Macedonia
- Philippines
- Serbia
- Tajikistan
- Turkmenistan
- Ukraine
- Uzbekistan
While the government has yet to reveal whether this is the final list, other nationalities may be added after some time if the country fails to meet its market needs with the help of workers from the countries listed above.
Additional requirements are expected to be shared by the government soon.
Once the one-year period is over, foreign workers will be able to extend their stay in the country for work purposes under alternate pathways.
Slovakia Has a Quota of 3,000 National Visas for Highly Qualified Workers & 2,000 National Visas for Skilled Workers for This Year
In March of this year, the Slovak authorities said for AtoZSerwisPlus that the country has a quota of 5,000 national visas for this year.
Of the total number, the Ministry of Labour of Slovakia said that 3,000 national visas will be granted to highly qualified workers throughout 2024.
The same said that the remaining number, 2,000 national visas, will be granted to skilled workers, with 200 spots already allocated for bus drivers.
