Spain Launches Entry/Exit System at Melilla-Morocco Border
Spain’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, inaugurated the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) at the Melilla-Morocco border, demonstrating Spain’s readiness for the upcoming changes. Although the EES is set to be fully implemented by the end of this year, Spain has taken early steps to ensure a smooth transition.
€11 Million Investment to Modernize Border Control
During the inauguration, Minister Grande-Marlaska emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating that the Spanish government is committed to ensuring the system functions effectively and efficiently once fully launched.
The new system at Melilla-Morocco represents a €11 million investment to enhance border security and improve the travel process for non-EU nationals.
What Will Change at the Melilla-Morocco Border with EES?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace manual passport stamping with automated border control, significantly modernizing the process.
Key changes include:
- Mandatory registration for all non-EU nationals, even those eligible for visa-free entry into the Schengen Area.
- Collection of biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints, along with personal information.
- Data storage for three years—after completing the initial registration, travelers won’t need to repeat the process for three years unless updates are required.
Once registered, travelers will only need to undergo verification, which will speed up future border crossings.
Goals of the Entry/Exit System (EES)
The EES aims to:
- Track entry and exit of all non-EU nationals in the Schengen Area.
- Identify overstayers.
- Prevent irregular migration and detect false identities.
- Streamline the border control process for non-EU travelers.
It is estimated that the EES will affect approximately 700 million non-EU travelers to the EU each year, contributing to enhanced security and efficient border management across the bloc.
