How to Qualify for Spanish Citizenship Through the Democratic Memory Law
According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applicants may qualify if they meet one of the following criteria:
- Born outside Spain to a mother, father, grandmother, or grandfather who was originally Spanish.
- Born to parents or grandparents who lost their Spanish nationality due to political, religious, ideological, or sexual identity persecution.
- Children born outside Spain to mothers who lost their nationality by marrying a non-Spanish national.
Grandchildren Law Valid Until October 2025
Introduced in October 2022, the Grandchildren Law was designed to facilitate citizenship for descendants of Spanish emigrants.
- Between October 2022 and May 2024, over 226,000 descendants of Spaniards applied for citizenship.
- In November 2024, the Spanish Ministry of the Presidency and Justice extended the deadline for applications until October 2025, ensuring more descendants can apply.
Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications through Spanish consulates and provide documented proof of ancestry to qualify for this special pathway to Spanish citizenship.
