Ukrainians Face Language Barriers When Accessing Employment in EU Despite High Tertiary Education Levels
According to the Survey of Arriving Migrants from Ukraine (SAM-UKR), which had 4,179 Ukrainian nationals as respondents, language is the main barrier to employment, as 98 per cent of them speak Ukrainian, another 88 per cent have language proficiency in Russian while only 50 per cent speak English, AtoZSerwisPlus.pl reports.
As it is reflected in the survey, Ukrainians who had better language proficiency in specific countries gravitated towards those countries. Language training courses were the first reason for Ukrainian nationals finding it difficult to access the labour market in EU countries – 53 per cent said so, while another 20 per cent listed lack of childcare options as their main cause.
It is worth mentioning that three in ten unemployed respondents were at the same time facing multiple barriers, further compounding their access to employment opportunities. In addition, six in ten unemployed respondents claimed that finding employment was an urgent or very urgent priority for them.
More Than Three-Quarters of Ukrainians Are Employed
Regarding employment, the survey revealed that 78 per cent of the respondents were able to work in the labour market, and another 22 per cent were economically inactive, with 11 per cent of the latter being on wait for their qualifications to be recognised, five per cent were students or homemakers.
In total, six out of ten respondents were employed during the time of the survey. Furthermore, respondents who worked in engineering, science and technology were less likely to end up unemployed, same as those who worked in education and teaching, as only 27 per cent of them were likely to face unemployment.
Respondents who worked as beauty professionals or technical and construction workers were more likely to be unemployed – around 52 per cent, while 96 per cent of those who were not working before displacement are now employed in European countries.
In general, employment among Ukrainians varies in language ability, education level and work experience. Those who had technical degrees or tertiary level of education were more likely to be employed, while others, especially those that have not learned the language of their host country or English, were more likely to be unemployed.
