What are Poland's employment prospects in 2023?
The sixth-largest economy in the European Union (EU) and one of the continent's fastest-growing economies is Poland, a nation in Central Europe.
The Republic of Poland, a democratic nation, provides a good standard of living. One of its key sources of income is tourism. With sports like skiing, sea bathing, sailing, and mountain climbing, it is recognized for its breathtaking surroundings and draws visitors from around the world.
Poland is conveniently connected to all of Europe's advanced economies thanks to its central location in the continent. It has long-standing business ties with a number of nations, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain. Poland is cited as a potential location for investment and development due to its political and economic stability, skilled labor force, and sizable domestic market.
Current situation
The Central Statistical Office of Poland (GUS) reports that in March 2022, private sector employment in Poland increased 2.4% over the same time in 2021. For the same time period, employment rose by 0.2% on a monthly basis. In 2023, an increase in paid employment was noticed.
Construction, manufacturing (electricians, tailors, welders, and tool makers), healthcare (physiotherapists, doctors, nursing professionals, and ambulance workers), transportation (bus drivers, truck drivers, and stock clerks), food (cooks and bakers), and education all suffer from a lack of skilled workers, according to a 2021 study by the Polish Minister of Development, Labor, and Technology (vocational training staff). Additionally, there is a scarcity of accountants and auto mechanics.
According to a different study, there would be a lack of qualified workers in the fields of science, engineering, business, administration, etc. Of these, 15% are for sales and service professionals and 34% are for high-level professionals.
What are Poland's employment prospects
According to the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP), the sectors where there is expected to be the largest employment growth in Poland would be oil and gas and repair of household goods.
With Poland, too, like other European countries, facing problems such as the aging of working-age populations, there will be a demand for skilled workers in artificial intelligence and other sectors of information technology (IT).
The highest-paid professionals in Poland as of 2021 are doctors/surgeons whose annual pay will range from 14,900 PLN to 42,800 PLN (Poland Zloty), where 1 PLN equals €0.21. Bank managers could expect to be paid 9,540 PLN to 27,400 PLN, and orthodontists can expect an annual income of 8,050 PLN to 23,100 PLN. Payments of professors and marketing directors could range from 7,160 PLN to 20,500 PLN and from 5,370 PLN to 15,400 PLN, respectively.
The minimum salary in 2023 is higher than previously proposed. The government adopted the regulation
As from 1 January 2023, the minimum salary is to increase to PLN 3,490, and as from 1 July – to PLN 3,600. The Council of Ministers adopted a regulation on this matter. This is more than the previous proposal suggested. – As the government responsible for financial security of Poles, we are responding to inflation caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine – says the Minister of Family and Social Policy, Marlena Malag.
The Council of Ministers adopted a regulation on the amount of the minimum salary for work and the minimum hourly rate in 2023.
An increase in the minimum salary will ensure financial security for Poles, we will not allow a situation where the salary is not enough to satisfy basic needs. The increase is our response to the expectations of employees, in this way we respond to inflation caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine – says the Minister of Family and Social Policy Marlena Mal?g.
As from 1 January 2023, the minimum salary will increase to PLN 3,490, and as from 1 July – to PLN 3,600. Next July, the minimum salary will be by PLN 590 higher than the minimum salary for work this year.
At the same time, the minimum hourly rate in 2023 will increase to PLN 22.80 from 1 January and to PLN 23.50 from 1 July, respectively. Next July, the rate will be by PLN 3.80 higher than that in 2022.
Protection of employees
The minimum salary plays a major role in reducing poverty and income inequality and protects employees from working at lower wages. As the Head of the Ministry of Family points out, such a significant increase in the minimum salary is also required to protect the poorer classes of society from incurring a disproportionately inflated cost of the difficult economic situation in which Poland and Europe found themselves due to the war caused by Russia in neighbouring Ukraine.
Salaries will be higher than originally proposed
The amounts indicated in the regulation of the Council of Ministers are higher than the original proposals. Previously, we proposed that the minimum salary should increase – after two increases – to PLN 3,450, i.e. by PLN 440 when compared to the current year. The situation is similar in the case of the minimum hourly salary, which finally in 2023 was to stand at 22.50 – highlights Minister Marlena Mal?g.
As a result, from January 2023, the minimum salary for work will constitute 50.3% of the predicted average salary in the national economy for 2023, and from July 2023 – 51.9%.
As from July 2023, the minimum salary will be higher by 19.6% when compared to the lowest salary, which is applicable in 2022. In turn, when compared to 2015, the minimum salary will increase by 105.7%. In 2015, it amounted to PLN 1,750 – enumerates the Head of the Ministry of Family.
Minimum salary in 2023 will double
Pursuant to the Act on the minimum salary for work, if the total consumer price index predicted for the next year is at least 105% – two deadlines are set for changing the amount of the minimum salary and the amount of the minimum hourly rate: as from 1 January 1 and as from 1 July.
